Horses were often used in goods yards for moving wagons and heavy equipment. The last working horse retired in 1967, making it the last of a phenomenon that had lasted over 100 years. At its height, in 1913, there were 27,826 railway-owned cartage and shunting horses in the UK.
This image is of a railway shunting horse put to work in Ludlow in 1923 to support the growing rail industry and movement of goods.ย
