A.E. Housman: a Worcestershire Lad and his Abiding Appeal

Housman’s A Shropshire Lad was first published in 1896, and has never been out of print. A new and lavishly illustrated edition reminds us of the enduring attraction of his poems. Linda Hart, well known in Ledbury for her work on the Dymock Poets, reflects on the timeless and universal themes in Housman’s poetry. How did an acclaimed Latin scholar, who was only an occasional poet, come to be writing such heartfelt and deeply moving verse? In 1933 he controversially announced to a Cambridge University audience that “poetry seems to me more physical than intellectual.”  Max Hunt, Secretary of the Housman Society, is the reader for this illustrated presentation.
